It is hunting season here in Maine, so I can’t go walking in the woods until the end of month. So, for the time being, my computer screen is wearing this scene from one of my walking trails. The bottom shot is a close up of the right end of the log. As you can see, we have lichen and moss on on most of the trees, and all of the fallen ones. The ferns are pretty this year, but not quite as colorful as other years. This trail is a wet one, but worth booting up, because I see lots of birds in this area.

How very interesting, Sandy! I’ve never seen anything but lush green ferns and didn’t realize they changed color (except when they are dying in my care).
Hi Sandy, I love ferns in all their shapes and colors. We don’t have any in CO’s high altitude forests (at least not by me!). I saw beautiful lush green ones on my trip to MI. We do have lichen, though – this year it has thrived because of our wet weather. I think it makes for a very interesting photo!
I love ferns, what an intriguing photo!
Stay out of those woods for now…dangerous.
Hugs, G
Oh how lovely! I use to joke about living in Maine that in the winter you can’t go out because it is too cold and slippery, in spring you couldn’t go out becuase of the may flies, in the summer it was too humid, and finally when all the bugs were dead, the weather is just perfect and the woods are gorgeous in the fall you can’t go out cause you might get shot! I see you feel the same way!
Your fern shots are gorgeous! Maybe this year I’ll learn the names of more than a few ferns. I’ve always thought fall would be a great time to learn because it narrows the possibilities to evergreen ferns first.
) Happy November. Wish you were nearby and we could share a road walk or two.
such beautiful ferns and fallen trees. i’d boot up and go out hiking too if i could see something like this. you’ve captured fall at its best.
i’ve back commented to catch me up on all your posts. hope all is well. have a great day.
Very cool, particularly the close-up. Ferns drove me crazy in Acadia back in June as I tried to get good backgrounds for Lady Slippers.
